Quigly recalls the early comedies - made between 1913 and 1919 - when Chaplin soared to fame and demonstrates how different Charlie's character was from that of his creator. The book also succeeds in re-examining the moods and feelings of these early comedies from a fresh angle, consciously detaching herself from most of what has been written on Chaplin.
